CONTINUOUS AND COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION (CCE)

CONTINUOUS AND COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION (CCE)
Evalution has to be very comprehensive in system of evaluation which aims at many sided development of the personality of the child. “ the school of todays concerns itself not only with the intellectual persuits but also with the emotional and social development of the child, physical and mental health , his social adjustment and other equally important aspects of his life; in a word with an allround development of his personality”. Writes the muthaliyar commission(1952).
It is now agreed that evaluation is a continuous process, forms an integral part of the total system of education. Several important aspects of the students growth that cannot be measured by written examination, and other methods such as observation techniques, oral tests and practical examinations, have to be deviced for collecting evidence.
In the words of Indian education commission (1964-1966), “ Evaluation should concern itself with pupil’s physical development, personality and character, social achievement, academic achievement and achievement in various types of skills”. This is what would comprise a comprehensive programme of evaluation in schools. Again , the commission is of the opinion that evaluation is a continuous process; it forms an integral part of the total system of education and is intimately related to educational objectives. It exercises great influence on the pupil’s study habits and the teacher’s methods of instruction and thus helps only to measure educational achievement but also to improve it. In the words of H.H. Remmers and others, “ A comprehensive programme of evaluation provides an effective means of securing a developmental and cross – sectional picture of the characteristics of each pupil in the school.” Administrators, counsellors and teachers will be greatly benefited in the work of guidance and instruction if they are able to collect data about all dimensions of pupil’s personality and achievement.
The modern concept of evaluation suggest that it should be continuous. The students must be evaluated continuously through out the academic year. Project works, practicals, collections, assignments, seminars, internal examinations etc. To be considered while evaluating the students.
Evaluation also to be comprehensive in nature. The traditional examination system evaluate the students achievement in scholastic area only but success of an individual depend upon his overall development of the individuality. Hence co-scholastic area also to be considered while evaluating the students. Student’s achievements in sports and games, arts and work experience etc. Should give due importance in evaluation. Personal and social qualities of the students also to be considered to evaluate the student’s performance
The ‘continuous and comprehensive’ evaluation implies two interrelated usages. Continuous  means evaluation of students throughout his academic career and comprehensive means evaluation of the all aspects of the individual and group. However it does not de-emphasis the importance of term-end evaluation. We can sumamrise the modern concept of continuous and comprehensive evaluation as follows:

SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENTS

CO-SCHOLATIC ACHIEVEMENT (PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT, ARTS AND WORK EXPERIENCE)

PERSONAL AND SOCIAL QUALITIES
